Real stories from real families who made the switch
When it comes to parenting, every dollar counts, especially with all the baby essentials you need. At Mimi & Co, we understand that budget-friendly solutions are essential for growing families. One of the smartest financial decisions you can make is switching to reusable nappies. Not only do they offer significant cost savings, but they’re also better for the environment. In this blog, we’ll explore how switching to Mimi & Co reusable nappies can save you money, provide practical budgeting tips, and share real stories from families who have made the switch.
Money-Saving Tips: Budgeting for Baby Essentials
1. Understand the Cost Comparison
Switching to reusable nappies can lead to impressive savings. While the upfront cost of cloth nappies is higher, they can be used from newborn through toilet training, unlike disposables, which require constant repurchasing. On average, families save between $1,000 to $6,000 by using cloth nappies. Here’s a simple breakdown:
- Initial Investment
The cost of a complete set of reusable nappies and accessories.
- Ongoing Costs
Minimal costs for laundering and the option to add more inserts for extra absorbency if needed.
2. Start with a Basic Collection
There's no need to buy everything upfront. Start with a Mimi & Co starter bundle, which includes 3 day nappies with standard absorbency, 5 bamboo wipes, and a medium wet bag. This bundle is ideal for parents new to cloth nappies, offering a great way to see how cloth can fit into your daily routine while spreading out the costs.
3. Look for Bundles and Discounts

4. Manage Washing Costs
While washing cloth nappies incurs some cost, it’s generally less than buying disposables. Efficient washing practices—such as running full loads and using energy-saving settings—help keep these costs low. Investing in a high-efficiency washer can also make a big difference.

5. Track Your Savings
Keep a record of your spending on nappies and compare it to the cost of disposables. Tracking your expenses helps you see how much you’re saving and can motivate you to stick with reusable nappies.
Here are some more practical tips for saving money with cloth nappies:
Invest in a Quality Cloth Nappy Stash:
While the upfront cost of cloth nappies may seem higher, remember that this is a one-time investment. A full stash of Mimi & Co nappies, which can last from birth to potty training, will cost a fraction of what you would spend on disposables.
Reuse for Multiple Children:
Cloth nappies are durable and can be used for more than one child, amplifying the savings with each new addition to the family. If you take care of your nappies, they can last for years, saving you even more.
Resell Your Nappies:
Once your little one is potty trained, you can resell your cloth nappies. The resale market for high-quality nappies is robust, allowing you to recover a significant portion of your initial investment. At Mimi & Co, we have a dedicated Facebook group where you can sell your stash, buy second-hand nappies, or swap with other parents.
Avoid Emergency Store Runs:
With cloth nappies, you won’t find yourself making last-minute trips to the store because you’ve run out of diapers. This not only saves you money but also time and stress.

I never thought that I would make the switch to cloth. I found Mimi and Co on TikTok and went down the rabbit hole of watching tons of videos on her page. The more I watched, the more intrigued I got with wanting to learn about cloth. She made it seem way less complicated than it originally appeared and made it seem like something I could implement within my own family. I decided to switch my daughter to cloth at the end of April 2024 (she was just over 8 months old). We mainly use cloth diapers and reusable wipes, but there is the odd day that we’ll go back to disposables (diaper rash flares up a bit due to teething, we’re away from home for a few days, need to catch up on washing/folding, etc.). We still use disposables for my 2.5-year-old son, so we still buy his diapers, but as he’s very close to being done with diapers, he doesn’t go through as many as my daughter. For her, we were having to buy a box of diapers almost every month and would go through a box of wipes in the same amount of time. At the beginning of April (before my order arrived), I bought one box of diapers and wipes, and since then I haven’t had to repurchase any diapers for my daughter and haven’t needed to buy any more wipes. With 2 kids in diapers, being able to cut out the cost for one kid has been huge. I love my cloth diapers and am so glad that I made the switch. If we decide to have more kids in the future, I’m fairly confident that we’ll use cloth for them as well.

My family and I are brand new to cloth! We decided to give it a go with our 3rd child as we moved regional and the shops just aren’t around the corner any more. We thought if we were to run out of disposables and have no backups with the nearest open store 45 minutes away, what a nightmare haha!
Cloth was supposed to be the “back up," but we have now been using cloth for almost all of our daytime nappies. We have now purchased our first wool cover and are looking into nighttime setups!
As overwhelming as it was to begin with, it’s turned out to be SO SIMPLE!

For me, it was all about sustainability. I got so many more nappies than I ever needed (and expensive ones), so I didn't expect it would save me that much money, but wow, when I did some calculations, I was actually really shocked at how much I saved financially! I've actually found cloth easier in a way, as there is no running out of nappies. My favourite thing—in the summertime, my babe just lives in a nappy and singlet, and it looks so so cute in photos.
Mimi
If I were to do a quick calculation, I would say we’ve saved about $8,000 on nappies!
For 18 months I had 2 babies in cloth, which is like $200 nappies a month!
My 2yo also reacts to every disposable under the sun, so we’d have to buy exy nappies, which are like $1 each! INSANE

It makes more sense for me to use cloth nappies. I’m a first-time mom; I live in an apartment building, and we have the smallest bin. I also have a preference for natural fibres as I have sensitive skin. I can’t imagine putting my son in disposables 24/7. (We use disposables overnight.) Using cloth nappies is hard work and has a steep learning curve, but so rewarding to use.
Caitlin
I love less rubbish; dopamine dressing my baby & using cloth gave me a sense of routine when I had none after having my first baby. The thing that convinced my husband was that the bin bag didn’t stink by pick-up day.
