When you’re washing cloth nappies, keeping your washing machine clean is just as important as cleaning the nappies themselves. Regular maintenance will ensure your machine stays in top condition and that your nappies get the best possible clean. Here’s a simple guide to keeping your washing machine fresh:
1. Clean the Detergent Drawer:
- Remove the detergent drawer from the machine.
- Soak it in hot, soapy water for a few minutes.
- Scrub away any buildup with a brush.
- Rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry before reinserting it.
2. Wipe Down the Drum and Rubber Seals:
- Wipe the rubber seals around the door with a damp cloth.
- Make sure to clean any folds or areas where mold and grime can build up.
- For top-loaders, clean the inside of the drum as well.
- Regularly check and wipe down the seals to avoid mold and mildew.
3. Clean the Water Filter:
- The water filter traps lint and debris, so it’s important to clean it regularly.
- Find the filter (usually located at the bottom front of the machine) and place a towel underneath to catch any water.
- Unscrew or pull out the filter and drain any trapped water.
- Remove any debris and rinse the filter under warm water.
4. Run a Hot Cleaning Cycle:
- Set your machine to the longest, hottest cycle (90°C if possible).
- Add 1 cup of white vinegar to the detergent drawer or ½ cup of baking soda to the drum.
- This will help break down detergent residue and eliminate odors.
- You can also use a commercial washing machine cleaner for extra cleaning power.
5. Wipe the Exterior:
- Don’t forget to clean the exterior of your washing machine.
- Wipe the control panel, lid, and sides to remove dust and grime.
6. Leave the Door Open:
- After each wash, leave the door open for a while to allow the machine to air out and dry.
- This prevents mold growth and helps with any lingering odours.
7. Regular Maintenance:
- Drain the water filter regularly, especially when washing cloth nappies.
- Wipe down the drum and seals every few washes to prevent buildup.
- Avoid using too much detergent to prevent residue buildup, which can affect machine performance.
